Taking a road trip is fun.

The open road, awesome scenery, new places.

But you know what isn’t fun on a road trip though?

Finding a clean bathroom.  Especially if you are traveling with kids.

Here’s a tip we used that came from my brother-in-law, Dave:

When nature calls while on a road trip, stop at an upscale hotel and use the bathroom in the lobby.

I’m a Hilton Honors member, so I tend to stop at Hilton properties.  But you do you.

The best ones are hotels that do a decent amount of convention business.

Easy in and out.

If it’s raining, the entrance is covered.  So nobody gets wet.

Now you may be thinking this isn’t nice to do.

But I value safety and cleanliness for my family.  Two things that a hotel provides.

And I’m not a cheapskate.  You aren’t either.

So when you are done, stop by their concession area and buy a couple snacks or drinks.  The prices are about what you’d pay in a convenience store anyway.

And you know what else?

Because you never know what you’ll experience while taking a road trip, I recommend keeping a defensive weapon on you at all times.

The thing that’s always in my pocket is Mace Pepper Spray.

I’ve carried the pocket model on me for the last 6 years.  Fortunately, I’ve never had to use it.

Pepper spray allows you to stay far enough away from any attacker so they (hopefully) can’t get their hands on you or your family.

I’m not trying to win a fight.  I’m trying to get myself and my family away from a scary situation.

So protect yourself and your family by grabbing some pepper spray for your pocket or handbag.  You’ll feel more confident knowing you have something to get you out of a jam.

Be Safe, Have Fun,

Darren Bayne
