One of the highlights of my day is taking my dog, Sadie, for a walk.  Every afternoon, I slip on her harness, attach her retractable leash, and we’re off.

Our neighborhood is awesome, but it has one flaw.

No sidewalks.

So we walk along the side of the road.  Moving into someone’s yard when a car comes.

It’s odd though how many people walk the wrong way.

I thought what I’m about to say was common knowledge.  It was certainly drilled into me at both home and school.

What is it?

You WALK on the LEFT side of the road.  You BIKE on the RIGHT side of the road.

But every day, I see people walking on the right side of the road.  Cars coming up behind them and they are oblivious.  Almost getting clipped when an SUV tops a hill going faster than the posted speed limit.

So that’s the big thing to remember…

Walk on the LEFT side of the road.

That’s the safety tip for the day.

But here’s one more…

When you go for a walk (with or without a dog), carry something for your protection.

My go-to when walking with Sadie is pepper spray.

I recommend Mace Pepper Spray-Pocket Model.

It comes in two other models, but I like the Pocket Model because it’s shorter and fits in my pocket easier.

The other big plus is the flip top safety cap.  You lift the cap with your thumb nail when you slide your thumb on the button.  Big plus for it not accidentally going off when you don’t want it to.

I take the attached keychain off of it.  Personal preference.

Get one for every member of the family who’s over 12.

And then make sure to walk on the LEFT side of the road.

Be Safe, Have Fun,

Darren Bayne
