One of the highlights of my day is taking my dog, Sadie, for a walk.  The way she acts, it’s the best part of her day too.

I call them “walks”.

A more apt description would be “canine sniffing expeditions”.

She’s a Black Mouth Cur and is definitely from the hound family.  Her nose stays close to the ground almost the entire trip.

Anyway…

Daytime walks are the best.  She can see (and sniff) what’s going on throughout the neighborhood.

But during the winter months when it gets dark earlier, sometimes we have to take our walks at night.  And we don’t have sidewalks.

To keep us safe, I always wear a reflective vest so oncoming vehicles see us way before they get close to us.

The one I use is nothing fancy, but it does the job.

It’s called an AYKRM High visibility reflective safety vest.  Mine is in yellow.  And two sizes bigger than the casual shirts I wear.

I want it big because during the winter (even in Alabama), it’s cold.  So your vest should fit over any coat you wear while walking at night.

I also like it because it connects in the front with velcro instead of a zipper.

Finally, I chose yellow just in case I ever need to go to a party dressed as the construction worker from the Village People to sing “Y.M.C.A.”.  It hasn’t happened yet.  But I’m prepared if it does.

So grab a reflective safety vest for everyone in your family that walks at night.

Sadie and I will be proud of you.

Be Safe, Have Fun,

Darren Bayne
